Welcome
My name is Joseph Angarella ("Dr. Joe"). I am a private practice post-doctoral psychological assistant offering mental health assessment and psychotherapy for individuals and families.
What is a 'Psychological Assistant?'
A psychological assistant is an individual admitted to the supervised practice of psychology who has not yet met all of the state requirements for licensure. There are two kinds of psychological assistants, those who are still working on a doctoral degree, and those like me who have already met all the educational requirements for licensure. A psychological assistant works under the direct supervision of a licensed psychologist who provides case oversight. My supervisor is Dr. Tsoline Konialian-Matossian, PsyD (License # PSY 19955).
What kinds of services do you provide?
I work with patients who present with a variety of psychological and psychosocial problems including anxiety and mood disorders, substance abuse and dependence, personality disorders, psychoses, and sexual compulsivity. I specialize in the treatment of patients with co-occurring disorders (the presence of two primary mental disorders, one of which is a substance use problem). During individual and and group therapy sessions, my patients and I explore a variety of issues and work to resolve those that impede their ability to be all they can be.
What kinds of therapeutic treatments do you use?
The kind of treatment provided depends solely on the presenting problem and the patient's needs. I have specialized training in motivational enhancement therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectic behavior therapy, feminist narrative therapy, and supportive therapy. The form of therapy is determined jointly with the patient after the diagnostic phase of treatment. I use a patient-centric approach where the patient is directly involved with treatment planning at every phase.
Do you provide family therapy?
Yes. When mental health problems affect the family system, it is vital for the family to get the help they need.
Do you have experiencec working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients?
Yes, I have extensive experience working with members of the LGBT community, including adolescents questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. My doctoral dissertation was an exploration of substance abuse treatment experiences of transgender women.
Do you accept insurance?
Depending on the type of insurance coverage you have, I can bill your insurance company for you, or I can provide you with the documentation necessary to seek reimbursement from your insurance company. Bring your insurance card with you on your first appointment and together we will explore your insurance options. I am on some insurance company panels and can obtain pre-authorization for treatment if needed.
Do you accept payment from the California Victims Compensation Program (CalVCP)?
Yes. CalVCP pays for up to 40 individual or group therapy sessions for the treatment of mental health problems. Please call for more information.
Do you accept referrals from drug/alcohol treatment centers?
Yes I do. Many of my patients were referred to me by substance abuse treatment providers throughout the Los Angeles area. In many instances, your substance abuse treatment counselor and I can coordinate care.
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes, I accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards.
Where is your office located?
My office is on the campus of BHC Alhambra Hosptial located at 4519 Rosemead Blvd in Rosemead, CA. I am also available to meet with patients at hosptals and drug/alcohol treatment facilities throughout the greater Los Angeles area.
